Teachers across the country who are interested in impacting public education networks through the implementation of the Steam approach have until August 23 to register for the public notice that will select 50 professionals to join the Community of Educators Liga Steam – Cohort 2023. The entire process is free and includes a certificate of 50 hours of educator training. Steam is an educational approach that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics and is widespread in the United States, China, Australia and the United Kingdom, but it is still recent in Brazil. The Steam approach develops knowledge through active methodologies, such as project-based learning, based on solving real day-to-day problems. The projects value the collective contribution of students and the application of knowledge and skills from different areas. The Steam League was launched in 2022 by the ArcelorMittal Foundation and promotes this type of approach in Brazilian schools through the Steam League Award, which this year received submissions from nearly a thousand public school teachers in 25 Brazilian states and the Federal District. The league is an initiative of the ArcelorMittal Foundation and the Banco do Brasil Foundation, in partnership with AVSI Brasil (Association Volunteers for International Service) and Tríade Educacional. Knowledge “Whoever is going to carry out this implementation does not necessarily need to be trained in these areas”, Lilian Bacich, director of Tríade Educacional, told Agência Brasil this Monday (24th). Both private and public school teachers are invited to participate in this selection process, ranging from basic education to higher education. In addition to filling out a form with basic questions related to work in education and an interest in impacting public networks, educators must answer questions related to Steam knowledge. According to the selection criteria, the candidate needs to have some knowledge about active methodologies, “because the Steam approach requires the educator to develop a protagonist student, who is autonomous. This person needs to have knowledge about active methodologies. In addition, he must be interested in impacting public networks. There are questions to understand what his motivation is. That also counts for us”, said Lilian. This is the second year of the public notice. The first also had 50 educators who, at the end of the training, published an e-book (digital book), in which they expose their ideas. The intention is to carry out a new notice in 2024, to disseminate Steam. Training The list of those selected will be announced on September 1st. Until December, they will receive specific training to become a reference in Steam, in order to disseminate this educational approach. At the end of the year, they will design an implementation project and, in the following year, they will receive mentoring to support them in this implementation. As there will be people from all regions of Brazil, the first part of the training will be online and the second will involve the implementation of the project in the networks. Research carried out last year shows that educators in the country realize the importance of bringing Steam projects to the classroom, involving creativity, communication, critical thinking of students, but they do not know how to do this. In Brazil, this is very recent. As we have identified the potential to develop the student integrally within the school, this training is needed. So, the impact is extremely positive, because we realize that teachers who learn and take it to their classrooms, or disseminate it on a network, reap the rewards of a more interested student, who looks around and tries to solve problems. That’s what we need: a citizen who has a broader view of their reality”, said Lilian.
