Tarcísio de Freitas and Felício Ramuth, respectively elected governor and deputy governor of the state of São Paulo, were sworn in this morning (1st) by the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp). Tarcísio and Ramuth are the 64th governors and vice-governors since the beginning of the Republic in the country, in 1889. The ceremony took place at the Palácio 9 de Julho, seat of the São Paulo legislature, in Ibirapuera, and was presided over by the president of Alesp, Carlão Pignatari. Due to the mourning for Pelé’s death, the Brazilian National Anthem was not performed. In his first speech as governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio thanked the people of São Paulo for the more than 13 million votes received and stated that his government will be guided by popular demands. “The responsibility of governing a state like São Paulo, which if it were a country, would be the 21st economy in the world, and the third in Latin America, is enormous. It’s just not greater than the motivation to make a difference. Despite the strength, we have an unequal state and attention to popular demands must be the main driver of state action,” he said. “We are going to govern for everyone, renewing hope for a better future, realizing and exploring every potential of the state and there are many potentials, betting on innovation, on technology as a powerful weapon for growth and improvement in service delivery”, he added. Speaking to Alesp deputies, the new state governor defended dialogue with the opposition and the search for consensus. “We are going to work on building consensus on convincing through technical work and transparency, always respecting differences, always with a proactive attitude, we are going to seek the majority to carry out programs and maintain a deep respect for our opponents”, he explained. Tarcísio stressed that the union of the benches, the situation and the opposition will be important for the interests of the state of São Paulo. “Dialogue will also be important to unite the benches around the interests of the state of São Paulo, in order to fill a large gap. Since the 1930s, there has been an imbalance between the economic weight of São Paulo and the political weight of São Paulo. São Paulo needs to have more of a voice”, he highlighted. The new governor said that São Paulo deserves a dynamic and open economy, in partnership with entrepreneurs and the private sector. According to Tarcísio, the state should assume the leading role in energy transition processes and be a leader in the green economy. “We know that financial flows will be strongly adhered to environmental standards. The commitment to activate the levers of growth, the increase in energy supply, the reduction of the tax burden, the offer of credit for micro-enterprises and small entrepreneurs, heavy investments in infrastructure, professional training and digitization must be honored by this government” , he explained. Social responsibility The new governor of São Paulo highlighted that economic growth should not be an end in itself, but serve as an engine for social development. “We cannot remain inert to the daily suffering of drug addicts crowded in cracolândias, insensitive to the situation of those who have no shelter, who do not have jobs, who have no future, who have no hope”. “We cannot consider hunger to be normal in a world that has so much technology, we cannot tolerate illiteracy. We can and must contribute to increasing the supply of housing, revitalizing urban centers, improving mobility, improving education and health services, strengthening income transfer programs and combating poverty,” he added. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), aged 47, was elected governor of São Paulo, in the second round, with 55.27% of the valid votes or 13,480,643 votes. He was supported by former President Jair Bolsonaro. He is a career civil servant, graduated from Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (Aman) and graduated in engineering from Instituto Militar de Engenharia. He was part of the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Haiti. He worked in the areas of infrastructure and investment, was president of the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) and Minister of Infrastructure. After the inauguration ceremony at Alesp, Tarcísio and his entourage traveled by train to Palácio dos Bandeirantes, the seat of government, in Morumbi, in the south zone, where he will be received by former governor Rodrigo Garcia and will inaugurate the government secretaries.
