On January 11, the payment of IPVA 2023 (Property Tax on Motor Vehicles) in the state of São Paulo begins. The schedule was released by the Treasury Department, which also announced the installment of the amount in up to five installments. Those who decide to pay the tax in cash will have a 3% discount. Tax rates for new and used vehicles remain the same as in 2020: 4% of the vehicle’s value for passenger cars; 2% for motorcycles and the like, single cab vans, minibuses, buses and heavy machinery; 1.5% for trucks; 1% for rental vehicles. This year, the state government allows, depending on the value of the IPVA, the system to automatically calculate the number of installments in three, four or five, equal and consecutive installments. Each installment must have a minimum value of R$ 68.52, which corresponds to two Fiscal Units of the State of São Paulo (Ufes). The number used to calculate the tax is the market value of the car for 2023, which is available on the Treasury Department website. The state of São Paulo has an estimated fleet of 27 million vehicles, and IPVA is required for 17.9 million vehicles. If it is late, the taxpayer is subject to a fine of 0.33% per day of delay and default interest based on the Selic rate, which is used as a reference for other interest rates in the economy. After 60 days, the percentage of the fine is 20% of the value of the IPVA. Payment calendar – Single installment in January with a 3% discount; – Single quota in February, without discount; Installment, no discount, minimum quota of R$ 68.52 – In 3 installments, from January to March (between R$ 205.56 and R$ 274.07); – In 4 installments, from January to April (between R$274.08 and R$342.5); – In 5 installments, from January to May (above R$ 342.60).
