Senators sworn in in snap session

The 27 senators elected in October last year were sworn in today (1st) at the Senate floor. The inauguration took place at the so-called preparatory meeting for the first legislative session. In past elections, a third of the House was renewed. The other two-thirds will be renewed in 2026. Each of the 27 senators elected last year confirmed, in a few words, their commitment to the country and their states. It was a short session, of protocol rites, and lasted about half an hour. Some elected senators were chosen by President Lula to compose the first echelon of the government. Flávio Dino (PSB-MA) was chosen Minister of Justice; Wellington Dias (PT-PI) is the new Minister of Social Development; Camilo Santana (PT-CE), the Minister of Education; and Renan Filho (MDB-AL), Minister of Transport. According to the Constitution, the parliamentarian who assumes the position of minister does not lose his mandate in the National Congress. Soon after being sworn in as senators, the four must return to the ministries and leave the chairs with the alternates of each plate. Then the second preparatory meeting will begin, for the election of the President of the Senate. The mandate of the president, who is also responsible for the Presidency of the National Congress, is two years. The current president, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), who has just been sworn in, and Eduardo Girão (Podemos-CE) are running for office.
