A survey released today (1st) by the Civil Defense shows that 24 people died in São Paulo as a result of the rains that hit the entire state of São Paulo between December 1, 2022 and January 31, 2023. In addition, two people are missing. Of the total deaths, six occurred in the city of Araraquara, in December, when a vehicle fell into a stream and was dragged by the waters. In the capital of São Paulo, there were two deaths during this period, one of them after the flood washed away a motorcycle, and the other after a wall collapsed on a person. In Osasco, two people died after being swept away by the floodwaters and two others after a house collapsed. In Monte Alto, three people died after the flood washed away a vehicle. In Porto Ferreira, a flood dragged a vehicle and claimed two lives. Deaths were also recorded in São Carlos, Campinas, Caraguatatuba, São Bernardo do Campo, Santo André, Araraquara and Indaiatuba. According to the survey, the rains left six people injured and made a thousand homeless. Another 5,939 residents of the state of São Paulo are displaced. The rains also put the cities of Aparecida and Socorro on alert. The Civil Defense also informed that 15 municipalities in the state have already declared an emergency situation. This week, the Civil Defense released an alert for heavy and intense rains throughout the territory of São Paulo. The alert is valid until next Friday (3).
