Figueiredo has been a career diplomat since 1980. He was Brazil’s permanent representative to the United Nations and headed the Brazilian embassies in Qatar, Portugal and the United States. In the area of climate change, he held the positions of head of the Division of Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development (2002-2004), director of the Department of the Environment and Special Issues (2005-2011) and Deputy Secretary-General for the Environment, Energy, Science and Technology (2011-2013).
