The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) InfoGripe Bulletin shows an increase in the number of cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 16 states in the last six weeks. The data released today (3) refer to the week of February 19 to 25 (epidemiological week 8). In São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Ceará, growth in adult and elderly populations are associated with covid-19. In Amazonas, SARS cases are also associated with the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). The other 12 states with an increase in SARS cases are Alagoas, Amapá, Bahia, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Piauí, Paraná, Roraima and Santa Catarina. There is an increase in SARS in children and adolescents in these states, but the laboratory data entered into the system does not yet allow identifying whether these cases are associated with covid-19. According to InfoGripe coordinator Marcelo Gomes, these data reinforce the need for the population to adhere to the vaccination campaign against covid-19. In priority groups, he explains, the vaccine can prevent serious cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
