Landslide leaves eight dead in Manaus

The Civil Defense of Manaus accounts for eight deaths as a result of a landslide that occurred on the night of this Sunday (12), in Nova Floresta, on the east side of the city. Three people and a dog were rescued alive. Still according to Civil Defense, four of the victims were children. Manaus City Hall informs that 11 houses would have been buried. Authorities were at the scene monitoring the rescues during the early hours of the morning. Of the eight victims, four were from the same family. One of them was rescued alive, but could not resist the injuries. In a note, the mayor of Manaus, David Almeira (Avante), said that residents reported “a lot of rain in the place”. The mayor scheduled for this Tuesday (14th) an audience with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the search for resources, in order to intensify the work to alleviate the city’s historical problem with areas of risk and sanitation. The Civil Defense reported that there were no signs of risk at the site where the landslide occurred, but that the team later found excess garbage thrown by the community in a higher area of ​​the region. The high levels of rainfall recorded recently added even more weight to the ground, which eventually resulted in landslides. At least 120 occurrences because of the rain were registered in Manaus on Sunday. On Saturday (11), the National Civil Defense System issued an above-average rain warning in the capital. The most impacted region was the northern part of the city, especially in the Monte das Oliveiras and Cidade Nova neighborhoods.
