An opinion from the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan) recommends complementary studies on the impacts of the construction of the Pedra Lavrada Wind Complex in the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba. The opinion asks the company to explain the use of explosives and points out the risk of burying archaeological assets located in watercourses. The measure comes after entities point out flaws in the environmental study of the company responsible for the work. They identified possible damage to the historical, archaeological and landscape heritage of the region. The venture will occupy 1,600 hectares with the installation of 372 wind turbines, distributed in 27 wind farms in eight municipalities. Iphan’s general coordinator of Environmental Licensing, Roberto Stanchi, explains that the licensing process for the wind complex is in the technical study phase. He says that the technician’s opinion is a recommendation. “What is contained in this document are recommendations for Iphan to verify whether this information is in fact correct or not. And if there is agreement with this technical opinion, which is the first stage of the evaluation process, what Iphan will do is question the entrepreneur about this information, whether it is true or not, or possibly requesting additional studies, which is also natural in the licensing process. For archaeologist Joadson Silva, a volunteer at the Seridó Vivo Institute, the group responsible for the technical note on which Iphan’s opinion was based, the work can cause deforestation, damage to traditional communities and damage to fauna and flora. of land follow the best engineering practices, all of which are validated with Iphan in the archaeological licensing process.
