The Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj) decided to definitively revoke the registration of anesthetist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra. The sentence was determined, unanimously, during a plenary trial, which was held on the afternoon of Tuesday, (28). The doctor was arrested in the act on July 10 last year, denounced for having raped a woman, during childbirth, in the surgical center of the Hospital da Mulher Heloneida Studart, in São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense. Council, “Definite cancellation of registration is the highest penalty, in accordance with current legislation. As a result, Giovanni Quintella Bezerra is completely barred from practicing medicine in Brazil”. Prison Giovanni Bezerra is in preventive detention, decreed by judge Rachel Assad. In the decision, the judge draws attention to the seriousness of the act practiced by the doctor, who did not even care about the presence of other professionals beside her in the operating room. “Such was the audacity and intention of the custodian to satisfy lust, that he practiced the conduct inside a hospital, with the presence of the entire medical team, in the middle of a surgical procedure. Therefore, not even the presence of other professionals was able to deter the prisoner from the disgusting action, which had the absolute vulnerability of the victim, a condition over which the author kept under his exclusive control, since he administered sedatives in doses that ensured the absolute inability to resist”, highlights the magistrate, in the decision. Rachel Assad also highlighted the complete disregard of anesthesiologist Giovanni Bezerra “for the dignity of women, for medical ethics and for the professional commitment he had signed not long ago”. “In a delivery where the woman, in addition to being anesthetized, gave birth to her child – in one of the most likely most important moments of her life – the custodian, taking advantage of her profession, violates all the rights she had over herself. Therefore, the day of his son’s birth will be marked by the trauma resulting from the brutal conduct he practiced, which will be remembered on all birthdays “, wrote the magistrate. The court has not yet set a date for the anesthesiologist’s trial.
