The Bibliotecas do Amanhã program, which aims to recover and modernize the nine libraries and five municipal reading rooms in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, was resumed by the city hall through the Municipal Secretariat of Culture in a partnership with the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Fecomércio-RJ). The launch took place this Wednesday, (29), at the Annita Porto Martins Library, in Rio Comprido, the first unit of the program, created seven years ago. The name is in honor of a former resident of the neighborhood. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Eduardo Paes, the Secretary of Culture, Marcelo Calero, and the president of Fecomércio-RJ, Antonio Florêncio de Queiroz Junior. Investment The objective is to invest more than BRL 30 million in the acquisition of collections, including accessible ones, new furniture, structural reforms and in the implementation of an educational and cultural program for each space, in what will be the second phase of the program, which started in 2016. City Hall and Fecomércio signed a letter of intent to formalize the partnership. The first units contemplated in this phase of the program will be the Euclides da Cunha Municipal Library (Governador Island), the Machado de Assis Municipal Library (Botafogo) and the Maria Firmina dos Reis Reading Space (Rio City Hall/Cidade Nova) in the Administrative Center San Sebastian (CASS). “The program is built on the basis of our need to reinforce libraries not only as spaces for enjoyment, but also for cultural production and integration of libraries with the neighborhoods where they are installed”, highlighted Calero. The secretary emphasized that “the development of the habit of reading is the most important thing”. “Those who have the habit of reading can write better, communicate better, have a better understanding of the world. And, more than that, it is a gateway to the fruition and production of other cultural modalities. From reading, the whole world opens up. We invest in libraries because it is where people become familiar with the cultural environment. The idea is that in the coming months we will be able to reach all 14 libraries and reading rooms, where we will develop programs to integrate residents, ”he said. The program is part of the strategy of the National Book and Reading Plan, directed towards the following points: democratization of access; promotion of reading and reader training; valuing reading, art and education; development of knowledge experiences and libraries as a place for meetings and exchanges; and cultural production and circulation. Importance of the book According to the manager of Books and Reading at the Municipal Secretary of Culture, Aladia Araújo, the idea is to bring books closer to people. “The book is sometimes such a distant thing, and neighborhood libraries make such a difference in the lives of children and adults. Everything that can give people a new perspective on life.” For Antonio Florêncio de Queiroz Junior, there is no greater legacy than education and culture. “These three libraries will be the starting point for us to adapt to the project and, in the future, be able to expand. Our work is always focused on education and culture, we need to encourage reading more and more, those who read a lot write well and prepare for the day by day.” Briefly, Mayor Eduardo Paes mentioned that reading is the gateway to exercising citizenship. “From understanding the world we live in, our rights, duties. It is reading that allows us to have a critical sense and this exercise of citizenship, I have no doubt that we are taking an important step and that it is essential to move forward with this program.” *Intern under the supervision of Akemi Nitahara
