Petrobras is going to expand domestic gas production in the Northeast region, with the start of the contracting process for chartering two platform vessels, destined for the Sergipe Águas Profundas project, in the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, about 100 km from the coast. The president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, said that the Sergipe Águas Profundas project stands out for its expressive reserves, with the potential to boost the supply of natural gas in the country and reduce our dependence on imports of this input. According to Prates, “another advantage is that gas is the crucial fuel for energy transition. Not only for its application versatility, as an energy source for the most diverse industries and delivery predictability, but mainly for its emission efficiency”, he evaluated. Of the FPSO type (floating oil production, storage and transfer system), the units will be strategic for expanding natural gas production. Each platform will have the capacity to process up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd). Oil from the region is light, considered of good quality, between 38 and 41 degrees API [que mede a densidade dos líquidos derivados do petróleo] and of greater commercial value. Together, the two units will have the potential to offer up to 18 million m3 of gas per day. According to the company, the project brings opportunities for the sector and for the states of Sergipe and Alagoas, with the implementation of a production project in deep waters above 2500 meters, incorporating state-of-the-art innovations.
