The country faced this Wednesday (5) with another attack on schools. In Blumenau, a man invaded a day care center in Blumenau (SC) and killed and injured children. Agência Brasil interviewed specialists to understand the reasons that lead to violence against schools. For the researchers, violence as a solution to problems, the lack of policies to encourage dialogue and respect for diversity; and the spread of hate groups are among some of the factors that can provide an overview of these violent acts. The prevention and control of these acts involves the adoption of programs that promote ethical and democratic coexistence inside and outside schools. Professor Luciene Togneta points out that policies must be built from studies led by universities and with those who deal with the school environment on a daily basis. “There is no such thing as a short term, but a long term and not just at school. It is the whole protection system where the school is inserted. People who are on the school floor need to think of solutions together with the university. The teacher does not know what to do in coexistence”. According to her, the monitoring of threats needs to be constant and not just at critical moments. Combating hate networks For Luciene Tognetta, one of the coordinators of the Group for Studies and Research in Moral Education (Gepem), schools are among the targets because they are places that give more visibility to hate speech and because of the concentration of people. “The act against a school causes a lot of repercussions and where it will be able to execute the plan accurately. In addition, the school is a place of excellence for coexistence, where I will find the other, the different”, says the graduate professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Letters at Unesp. The coordinator of the Program of Studies and Policies on Youth, Education and Gender: violence and coexistence at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (Flacso), Miriam Abramovay, points out that racist, misogynistic and hate narratives have increasingly gained adherence among young people, making it urgent to combat these networks. “We are talking about hate crimes here. Why do these young people have this hatred? What is happening to our youth. Why accumulate so much hatred for the school? Why want to kill? These are all questions that we are going to have to answer as quickly as possible so that there are no more massacres inside schools, ”she says. Valuing violence Specialists assess that the country’s scenario in recent years, with policies to encourage the use of weapons, disinvestment in programs focused on diversity, political polarization, favor an environment for acts of violence. The doctoral student in Education at Unicamp and researcher of school violence, Danila Zambianco, points out that the attacks are related to the fact that violence is now seen as an efficient strategy for resolving conflicts and empowering society. “There are many factors that lead to this effect. Among them, the trivialization of violence, the appreciation of violence, the use of it as a strategy for conflict resolution. We saw this with representatives of the Public Power praising violence as a strategy, as a means, and the weakening of diversity policies and, which unfortunately, weakens dialogue to build interpersonal relationships ”, she points out. Democratic coexistence Just as they point out that the factors for an attack on a school are complex, specialists point out that the prevention of these crimes will not occur in isolation, requiring the adoption of a series of government actions and the participation of society. “It is not enough to believe that putting an armed police officer in the school will solve the problem. We have already had cases in civic-military schools, for example, in Aracruz (ES). It’s not just about security, locking our children up. We have to make public policies to promote democratic coexistence and create a real society, where people can live together, dialogue, where violence is not tolerated, is not exalted”, emphasizes Danila Zambianco. National Diagnosis Miriam Abramovay defends a national diagnosis to understand what happens inside schools and to train education professionals to debate the theme. “You have to have a great diagnosis to know what is happening inside the schools. We don’t know and never have. There must be a great national diagnosis. Second, we have to have school coexistence projects, programs that are federal, state and municipal. Within the school coexistence programs, we have to train teachers, directors, parents on these topics”.
