The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, said this Thursday (13) that Operation Safe School has already resulted in hundreds of arrests, apprehensions of teenagers and searches across the country. The action, started last week, aims to prevent attacks on Brazilian schools, in a partnership between the federal and state governments. According to Flávio Dino, the Ministry of Justice will take stock of the operation this Friday (14th), with consolidated numbers of arrests and seizures made in the states. “Every day we have records of arrests and seizures of teenagers, as well as searches and seizures. One of the results of these operations is that we have attacks emanating from individuals who act alone, but we also have, unfortunately, groups that are organized mainly in the internet and that have several inspirations”, said the minister, at an event in Rio de Janeiro. Government action ranges from identifying people planning or actually carrying out attacks to identifying and dismantling these groups, he explained. Also this Thursday, the Ministry of Justice published an ordinance with rules for technology platforms to deal with the problem of attacks in schools. “Today we have a new mandatory norm, imperative for technology platforms, which could reach several sanctions, if there is no spontaneous adherence, which we hope will occur in relation to the new norms”, said the minister. “Today we are initiating the administrative processes related to each platform. They will be notified of these processes, of their duties and will have a deadline to provide information to the ministry.” Flávio Dino recommended that companies voluntarily comply with the rules so that there is no need for punishment. “If necessary, we will do it, both administratively and judicially. No company will have greater regulation than the laws of the country. That is the fundamental principle of a sovereign country,” he said. On Wednesday (12), the Ministry had launched a R$ 150 million notice to strengthen states and municipalities in combating and preventing attacks on schools. This Thursday, a new notice was launched, in the amount of R$ 100 million, aimed at municipal guards. According to the president of the National Council of Municipal Guards, Carlos Braga, the money from the new notice will help city halls in the safety strategies of school units. “The resource that the Ministry of Justice is going to release is extremely important for municipal guards, especially in this moment of crisis in schools in Brazil. Municipal guards are preventive and community by nature. Their place is, especially, in schools. This resource will help put more municipal guards in charge of school security”, said Braga. The Minister of Justice informed that it will be up to the states and municipalities to decide how the resources will be used and he pointed out that the money could be used, for example, to buy more vehicles and lethal or non-lethal weapons. Flávio Dino recalled that, in several countries, it is currently being discussed whether it would be beneficial to place armed agents inside schools and that, at that moment, it will be up to the local authorities to make the decision.
