This Wednesday (19), the date on which Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI) edited two ordinances, published in the Official Gazette of the Union, which establish two working groups to prepare and propose actions that seek solutions related to the issues of indigenous peoples in the country. One of the working groups will bring together indigenous jurists to analyze, from their point of view, the Statute of the Indigenous People. According to Ordinance No. 103, of April 18, 2023, signed by Minister Sonia Guajajara, the proposals and actions prepared by the working group aim at “differentiated access to programs, services and social protection actions by indigenous peoples”. The work will last for 180 days and its conclusions will be forwarded to the minister. Ordinance No. 101, of April 18, 2023, defines that the members of the working group must propose resolutive measures on the land situation of the Kinikinau people, in Mato Grosso do Sul. The group will have 90 days to complete their studies and present them to Minister Sonia Guajajara. The group will be made up of the minister and a representative of MPI bodies, including the Secretariat for Indigenous Territorial Rights and the Department for Mediation and Conciliation of Indigenous Conflicts. The Kinikinau indigenous people, also known as Kinikinawa, are scattered in villages in the western region of Mato Grosso do Sul. Most live in the village of São João, in the municipality of Porto Murtinho.
