The Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Silvio Almeida, signed this Friday (21), in Lisbon, two bilateral agreements: one for the protection of witnesses in criminal proceedings and another that establishes good practices in the promotion and defense of people’s rights. with disabilities. Almeida is in Portugal with the Brazilian delegation led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The agreement on the protection of witnesses in criminal proceedings provides for direct cooperation between the competent authorities of each country, bearing in mind the principle of proportionality. In Brazil, the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC) will be responsible for implementing the agreement and, in Portugal, this work will fall to the local Ministry of Justice. The other agreement aims to encourage the establishment of bilateral cooperation mechanisms for the exchange of good practices in the promotion and defense of the rights of people with disabilities. Public sites Among the topics to be worked on jointly between the two countries are: the development of models for assessing disability or incapacity; systems for obtaining statistical data and information; accessibility to information and communication and to public websites and web pages; in addition to professional training and employability. In an interview after the signing of the agreements, Almeida said that he intends to hear from Portuguese authorities regarding allegations of xenophobic and racist attacks against members of the Brazilian community who live in Portugal. He also said that he will talk to Brazilians who face this problem, in addition to mentioning the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, in negotiations with Portuguese authorities. “This visit has this idea of understanding how we, together with the Portuguese government, can collaborate to meet these demands, to meet people who are suffering from xenophobia and racism. We need to make a rights policy that looks to the present”, said Minister Silvio Almeida.
