This Sunday (23rd), SuperVia presents Cariocas with a show commemorating not only St. George’s Day and the National Choro Day, but also the ten years of the Trem do Choro. It was in 2012 that musician Luiz Carlos Nunuka, in partnership with friends, created a choro circle in Olaria, a neighborhood in the north of Rio de Janeiro, called 100% Suburban Cultural Institution. Given the success of the initiative, which attracted lovers of this musical genre, the following year (2013) the group started a partnership with SuperVia which, always on the day of Choro Day, provides a train where groups of musicians spread out in the eight wagons, named with big names of this musical genre. The first car pays homage to master Pixinguinha, one of the icons of Brazilian choro. The wagons Jacob do Bandolim/ Cesar Faria (Golden Season Set), Severino Araújo, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Altamiro Carrilho/ Mestre Siqueira, Raphael Rabello, Joaquim Antônio da Silva Callado and Paulo da Portela/Paulo Moura follow. “The partnership with SuperVia has lasted ten years. It is a very welcome partnership”, highlighted Nunuka, in an interview with Agência Brasil. He clarified that Trem do Choro does not only make choro, but also samba, “because one has a connection with the other”. Concentration The event is a reference to Pixinguinha’s birthday and celebrates the 106th anniversary of the composition Carinhoso, one of the greatest works by the artist and Brazilian music, written between 1916 and 1917. This year, Trem do Choro also honors the musicians: Waldir Azevedo, Xangô da Mangueira for the centenary and Josias Nunes, one of the founders of the choro group Chapéu de Palha. The 10th edition of the Choro Train will take place at the Central do Brasil station, starting at 8:21 am, informed Nunuka. “Timetables are never complete. They are broken. And the train will leave at 11:09. This is Supervia time,” he explained. Among the regional musicals that will be animating the wagons, Nunuka mentioned the Escola Portátil de Música, linked to Casa do Choro; the Grapiúna group; the School of Music of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ); Casa Viva School, in Manguinhos. “The public chooses which car they want to go in”, said Luiz Carlos Nunuka. Those interested should take the train from the Saracuruna branch. The trip ends around 11:40 am at the Olaria station. There, the musicians disembark to continue the show in the streets of the neighborhood, accompanied by the public. Walking, they will follow in procession, playing classics of choro, to Praça Ramos Figueira, known as Reduto Pixinguinha, close to the place where Pixinguinha lived for many years. There, the event is free. “People only pay for what they consume”. Entrance to the Trem do Choro is the normal cost of a SuperVia ticket.
