This year, 50 security agents were shot in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, according to data from the Fogo Cruzado Institute. Of that total, half died. According to the institute, the number of shots is 39% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2022, from January 1 to April 20. The death toll grew by 47% year-on-year, rising from 17 in 2022 to 25 this year. This year, military police were 80% of those hit by gunshots, as 40 victims were registered. Of those, 19 died and 21 were injured. Among Army soldiers, three were killed and one wounded. Victims were also recorded among civil police – one dead and two injured -, Air Force, one dead; Firefighters and municipal guards, one injured in each corporation.
