The Literary Festival of the Outskirts (Flup) announced the schedule for this year’s edition, which takes place on May 13. The date was chosen because it was the day of the abolition of slavery in Brazil, the day of the pretos and pretas-velhas in Umbanda and the birth day of the writer Lima Barreto. The latter is one of the highlights of the event for being the inspiration for the book Quilombo do Lima, which brings together stories by 22 black authors, and will be released on the occasion. The programming of Flup 23, on the 13th, will focus on Ladeira do Livramento, in the Providência region, considered the birthplace of the favela, samba, literature and Afro-Brazilian cultures in general. It is also the birthplace of Machado de Assis. In this year’s edition, he is honored alongside Mãe Beata de Iemanjá with the theme World of the word, word of the world. The organizers explain that “world of the word” is a reference to the founder of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) and one of the greatest writers in the country. And that “word of the world” reminds me of Iyalorixá, a writer who, in addition to Candomblé terreiros, worked in the fight for human rights, focusing on racial, gender and LGBTQIA+ issues. “We are going to hold this celebration to evoke the ancestral black men and women, asking permission to include Lima and Machado, and also celebrate the older men and women who, with their work and genius, continue to teach us what Brazil is”, highlights Julio Ludemir, founding director of Flup. “With Mãe Beata, Flup wants to draw attention to the strength of Afro-Brazilian oral culture, which unfolds in other writings and literature and even reaches slams, spoken poetry. With Mãe Beata, we want to give due importance to the way in which iyalorixás and babalorixás pass on knowledge and wisdom to their sons and daughters”, explains Daniele Salles, spokesperson for Flup. Music and debates The complete list of events for the day also includes carnival parades, children’s activities, feijoada, a debate table, homage to Mãe Beata de Iemanjá and a show by Leci Brandão. The program starts at 10 am, at Praça do Cais do Valongo, with Afoxé Filhos de Gandhy. At 11:00, the Prata Preta Block goes from there to Ladeira do Livramento, stopping at Arena Samol. There, there will be a presentation of Axé by the priestess of Candomblé Mãe Glória, with washing of the stairs. At noon, it’s time for the feijoada dedicated to black men and women. A special debate table at 5 pm will bring together the musician and writer Gilberto Gil, elected in 2022 for the ABL, and the sambista and writer Haroldo Costa, with mediation by the writer Eliana Alves Cruz. At 7 pm, it’s time for the samba de roda, with Dona Zélia do Prato, one of the master samba dancers of the Recôncavo Baiano. The samba school Vizinha Faladeira, champion of the carnival of Group B of the Liga Independente Verdadeiras Raízes das Escolas de Samba (LIVRES), performs next. To close the day of shows, Leci Brandão leads a show at 9 pm. Children’s Program Flup also has a program for children. The activity is led by Pretinhas Leitoras, Duda and Helena Ferreira, with the participation of a group of 13 black authors of children’s books. They will read their own stories. The ciranda of stories pays homage to the writer Machado de Assis, who will lend his name to a new Reading Room at Arena Samol. The Pretinhas Leitoras, Duda and Helena, interview, at 12:15, the writer Henrique Rodrigues, author of the children’s book “Machado de Assis Menino”.
