The Minister of Education (MEC), Camilo Santana, supported, this Tuesday (2), the approval of the Fake News Bill (PL 2.630/20), under discussion in the National Congress. The statement was given during a public hearing at the Senate Education, Culture and Sports Commission, which explained the reasons for suspending the implementation schedule of the new secondary education and presented the Ministry of Education’s strategic agenda for the coming years. During the meeting, the minister considered it important to regulate social networks as a way to face the increase in violence in Brazilian schools. “We know that this is the result of a culture that, unfortunately, in recent years, has been stimulated through violence, the acquisition of weapons, intolerance, the lack of regulation of the country’s digital platforms. This discussion that is being taken today for the approval of the so-called Fake News law, here in the National Congress, is even important ”. When presenting to the senators the balance of the Integrated Policies for the Protection of the School Environment, adopted by the Interministerial Working Group (GTI), coordinated by the MEC itself, Minister Camilo Santana pointed to 3,115 safety actions and implementation of psychosocial support in educational institutions. “There is a mental health problem that we need to face”, defended the minister. Among the short- and medium-term actions adopted by the GTI, the minister recalled that there is a channel for denouncing the Ministry of Justice and the Dial 100 of the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship for the population to communicate suspected cases of new violence and that the MEC made available an online booklet with guidelines for education professionals and society. According to the minister, the Ministry of Justice’s Operation Safe School has already resulted in 356 people being arrested (between arrested adults and apprehended adolescents); conducting 1,574 suspects, 358 searches and seizures and 3,342 police reports in the states. Senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS) congratulated the initiatives. “Operation Escola Segura, which you lead, together with the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, is playing a fundamental role and we will move forward”.
