President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva swore in General Marcos Amaro as the new minister of the Institutional Security Office (GSI) of the Presidency. The reserved ceremony took place this Thursday (4) at the Planalto Palace. Amaro takes over from former minister Gonçalves Dias, who left office on April 19 after the release of images showing him inside the Planalto Palace, interacting with vandals, on the day of the coup acts on January 8, in Brasilia. Since then, the executive secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Ricardo Cappelli, has been acting as head of the GSI. Marcos Amaro, 65 years old, is an Army reserve general. During his military life, he served in artillery units in Jundiaí (SP), in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and in Olinda (PE) and commanded units in Cuiabá (MT) and Santa Maria (RS). He was an instructor at the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras and at the Escola de Aperfeiçoamento de Oficiais and military attache at the Brazilian embassy in Suriname. From 2007 to early 2010, he was Chief of the Intelligence Division at the Army Intelligence Center. He was also adjunct to the GSI, secretary of presidential security and head of the Military House of the Presidency. He was still at the head of the Southeast Military Command and was Chief of Staff of the Army. General Amaro joined the reserve last year. In the academic area, he specialized in managerial excellence with an emphasis on public management at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) and in administration at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV).
