King Charles III of England will be crowned this Saturday (6) at Westminster Abbey in London. The ceremony will be attended by hundreds of foreign leaders, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The king is expected to arrive at the abbey at 11:00 am local time (7:00 am in Brasilia time). At the age of 74, Charles became king on September 8 last year, after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was in power for 70 years, the longest reign on the British throne. No other heir to the throne of England has waited so long to be crowned. In March, Lula and Charles spoke by telephone and dealt mainly with environmental issues, which have been a historical agenda of the monarch’s activities. As prince, Charles visited Brazil on four occasions, in 1978, 1991, 2002 and 2009. In all of them, he went to the Amazon region. King Charles III will be the 40th monarch to receive the crown at Westminster Abbey, in a religious ceremony that has been held for over 900 years and which began to follow the rituals of the Anglican Church after its creation by King Henry VIII in 1534 The coronation will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the foremost authority on Anglicanism. Before reading the oath, the new king will be anointed with aromatic oils. For the event, security has been tightened, and 30,000 police will be on the streets of London. Lula landed this Friday morning (5) in the English capital and in the afternoon met with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak. No agreements were signed, but Sunak announced an investment of R$500 million in the Amazon Fund.
