The plenary of the Senate approved this Wednesday (10) the substitute for the bill that changes the calculation of the minimum prices of agricultural products. The proposal establishes new parameters to better incorporate production costs, in particular the depreciation of used machinery and equipment. The matter goes to the analysis of the Chamber of Deputies. The project was definitively approved by the Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Commission (CRA) in August 2019, but there was an appeal for voting in plenary. According to the author, senator Luis Carlos Heinze (PP-RS), the delay — as well as the need for new investments — can take many producers out of the market and contribute to indebtedness in the countryside. “The merit of this project is to reach, mainly, family agriculture”, stated Heinze. The text also provides for proposals for new minimum prices to be discussed with the main entities representing the productive sector at least 30 days in advance of their publication. The approved proposal also determines that the minimum prices of agricultural products are defined by the National Monetary Council. The value cannot be less than the operating cost of production, calculated by the sum of the variable costs with the annual depreciation rates of machinery, equipment and improvements, according to criteria defined by the Federal Revenue Service. *With information from the Senate Agency
