A 4-story building partially collapsed on Monday night (16), on Rua do Amparo, in the Rio das Pedras community, in Jacarepaguá, west of Rio. According to the Fire Department, there were no casualties. The building was supported by two other properties that are next door. The municipal Civil Defense is also on site, analyzing the structure of the property to determine if there will be a ban on the building. At the time of the collapse, few people were on the floors and, as the building fell slowly, there was enough time for residents to leave the place. On June 3, 2021, another 4-story property also collapsed in the community, leaving some people injured. Emergence The community emerged at the end of the 1960s and was formed mainly by people coming from the northeast, in search of job opportunities. With the expansion of Barra da Tijuca, it has since then grown wildly. There is a lack of infrastructure and houses were built irregularly, without any urban planning. The 2010 IBGE Census indicates that the community had 63,000 residents. Rio das Pedras was also the birthplace of the militias. In the 1980s, local businesses began paying police officers to prevent drug dealers from invading their premises.
