In a speech during a working session of the G7, in Japan, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva once again defended the reform of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN). At the meeting, whose theme was “Towards a peaceful, stable and prosperous world”, Lula said that the council “is more paralyzed than ever”. Speaking of peace, he stated that “permanent members continue the long tradition of waging wars not authorized by the body, whether in search of territorial expansion or in search of regime change”. At the table, sitting opposite the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and between the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, Lula spoke in dialogue. “We strongly repudiate the use of force as a means of resolving disputes. We condemn the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine.” The president again called for a dialogue-based solution to the conflict in Ukraine and the creation of a space for negotiations. He highlighted other conflicts that occur outside Europe and that also deserve international mobilization. “Israelis and Palestinians, Armenians and Azeris, Kosovars and Serbs need peace. Yemenis, Syrians, Libyans and Sudanese all deserve to live in peace,” he said. He also defended the need for ratification of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. “They are not a source of security, but an instrument of extermination,” he said. “As long as nuclear weapons exist, there will always be the possibility of their use,” he added. Guterres After the working session, Lula spoke for about half an hour with the UN secretary general, António Guterres. Once again, he recalled the fact that the conflict in Ukraine is not being dealt with within the scope of the UN Security Council and reinforced the need for reform of the body. Environment was another theme of the meeting. Lula spoke about the Amazon Summit, which will take place in Belém (Pará) in August. Guterres guaranteed that he will support the Brazilian initiative to create a cooperation group formed by Amazonian nations, Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, countries that have large forests. Agenda In bilateral meetings, the president had meetings with the prime minister of India, Narendra Modi. The relationship between the two countries was the subject. “Countries of the greatest importance for the design of a new global geopolitics”, said Lula. India is Brazil’s fifth largest trading partner. In 2021, trade between the two countries reached the highest result in history: US$ 15.1 billion. That same year, Brazil exported more than US$ 6 billion to India and imported US$ 8.8 billion in Indian products. At the meeting with the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh, the conversations revolved around the need to increase trade between the two countries and cooperation in areas such as science and technology, including the possibility of an agreement between Vietnam and Mercosur . Also on Saturday night (Brasília time), the Brazilian president met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trade, environment and war were on the agenda. “We believe that Brazil and Canada are in a position to double trade relations,” said Lula, highlighting environmental preservation and the fight against climate change as points of convergence between the two countries. To the president of Comoros, Azali Assoumani, Lula reaffirmed Brazilian support for the African Union’s bid for a seat in the G20. The two also spoke about the need for greater bilateral technological cooperation and the possibility of using development banks, such as the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the African Development Bank in infrastructure matters.
