After successfully debuting last year in the capitals of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, the Ouro Preto Orchestra (OOP) begins today (23) a national tour of Auto da Compadecida, the opera, montage for the text by Ariano Suassuna. The first presentation will be in the capital of Pará, Belém, passing through Belo Horizonte, Manaus and Rio de Janeiro. Written by Suassuna in 1955, the text is considered a masterpiece by Literature professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj), Luiz Ricardo Leitão. “First, because he knows how to combine the entire Iberian heritage with native elements, even from other religious matrices. The theme and the language he uses capture the Iberian influence but, at the same time, work on how it was processed here, which is cordel, the fabulation of the northeastern popular artist. This is his first merit, which will bring together the popular and the Iberian tradition in the same work”, said Leitão to Agência Brasil. The work also stands out, according to the Uerj professor, for developing cartoonish and creative characteristics of characters who, despite their meager social status, as is the case of the main characters Chicó and João Grilo, counterpoint the power of the Church, represented by the bishop and by the city priest, in addition to the figure of the colonel. “We still have these representations being deceived, dribbled by the cunning of the apparently simple-minded character, but who knows how to get around the hegemonic figures of the city’s powers. This is very interesting.” In the evaluation of professor Luiz Ricardo Leitão, the text portrays the astuteness to survive inequality and oppression, of whatever kind. In addition to these aspects, the work brings the comedy of errors, which is a tradition of Brazilian costume theater that dates back to the 19th century and on which Ariano Suassuna worked. Author Ópera Auto da Compadecida is based on the homonymous book by Ariano Suassuna Disclosure Ariano Vilar Suassuna was born in João Pessoa, on June 16, 1927 and died in Recife, on July 23, 2014. He was an intellectual, writer, theorist of art, playwright, novelist, essayist, poet, plastic artist, professor, lawyer and Brazilian speaker. Creator of the Armorial Movement and author of works such as Auto da Compadecida (1955) and Romance d’A Pedra do Reino e o Príncipe do Sangue do Vai-e-Volta (1971), Suassuna was a tireless defender of the culture of Northeast Brazil and one of the greatest exponents of Brazilian literature. In 2012, he was appointed by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federal Senate as Brazil’s representative in the dispute for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Tour The tour of Auto da Compadecida, the opera, starts today, at Theatro da Paz, in Belém (PA). Tomorrow (24) there will be a second presentation at the same place. Tickets are already sold out for the presentations in the capital of Pará. The opera has original music by composer Tim Rescala, who signs the libretto with maestro Rodrigo Toffolo, also responsible for the musical conception and direction of the show. For the maestro, the challenge of adapting Suassuna’s text, which has already been staged countless times in the theater, was almost a gift. “It was a great happiness for us to have had this opportunity. It was a learning experience to be able to work and adapt the text for opera, to give life, a different energy to a Brazilian work that is so much ours”. This is the second season of the opera, which then goes to Belo Horizonte, on the 13th and 14th of June, with performances at the Palácio das Artes and tickets priced at R$40 and R$80. June 24th and 25th, with tickets between R$25 and R$80.
