Research carried out by the Locomotiva Institute and the Union of Official Teaching Teachers of the State of São Paulo (Apeoesp) reveals that the majority of the school community – students, teachers and parents of students – agrees that distance learning during the coronavirus pandemic has caused great learning losses. Among students, teachers and family members, the percentage reached 95%, 94% and 96%, respectively. According to the unprecedented survey Listening to the school community: challenges and demands of public education in São Paulo – released this Tuesday (23), in the city of São Paulo – for 94% of students, returning to face-to-face classes was more difficult to concentrate and Less participation in classes. Teachers (92%) and family members (95%) have the same assessment of students. When asked if the school had an increased importance in the post-pandemic, 62% answered yes, followed by 76% of teachers and 70% of parents of students. As for the importance of the role of teachers, 62% of students, 73% of teachers and 73% of family members consider that there was an increase in the perception of the relevance of this professional. Maximum marks In all profiles of the school community, the smallest part of the interviewees evaluates with maximum marks the quality of education in public schools in the state of São Paulo. For 14% of students, the grade given was 6.2, while 16% of students’ parents gave 6 and 19% of teachers, 6.9. In the survey, the items with the worst evaluation by students were the students’ degree of interest (46%), safety in schools (38%) and the number of students per classroom (29%). Among teachers, the number of students per classroom was indicated by 20% of respondents as the worst evaluated item, followed by the students’ degree of interest (16%) and integration between disciplines (10%). As for the parents, the degree of interest of the students (41%), safety at school (39%) and the number of students per room (29%) appeared. For all groups (99% of students, 95% of teachers and 98% of families), the state government should invest more in education. For the same percentage, a well-maintained and well-equipped school is fundamental for a quality education and that valued and motivated teachers are fundamental for the quality of education. The perception that teachers in the state of São Paulo are not valued is 75% among family members, 73% of students and 89% of teachers. As for teachers earning less than they should, 76% of family members believe it to be true, followed by 74% of family members and 92% of teachers. Daily perception According to the president of Apeoesp, Maria Izabel Azevedo Noronha, known as Professor Bebel, the data confirmed the daily perception of what teachers already faced and took to the conversation tables with the government. She highlighted that it took a pandemic for society to give importance to the role of education professionals and the school as a structure. “The survey portrays the teachers’ daily lives, with suffering, illness and mental health problems. When we think about appreciation, we don’t just think about money, which is important and negatively impacts the lack of professionals, but we lack all the interface that guarantees a quality teaching”, stated Bebel.
