The Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), the Federation of Wine Cooperatives of Rio Grande do Sul (Fecovinho), the Federation of Salaried and Salaried Rural Workers of Rio Grande do Sul (Fetar/RS), the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT ) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) signed this Wednesday (24th), in Porto Alegre, a pact for the adoption of good labor practices to eradicate work analogous to slavery in winemaking in Rio Grande do Sul. The partnership comes after companies in the wine sector were caught keeping people in a work situation similar to slavery, especially outsourced companies, who used the illegal situation during the harvest and pruning seasons. This year alone, MTE actions rescued 296 workers in this type of situation in the state. According to information from the MTE, the pact considers the historical and cultural relevance of viticulture and its importance for the economic, social and environmental aspects of Rio Grande do Sul. The state is the second in the country where the illegal practice had more workers rescued in 2023, behind only Goiás, which had 372 rescues. In Brazil, in the first four months of the year, 1,200 workers from work analogous to slavery have already been rescued. Action According to the MTE, through the pact, the producers undertake to eradicate work analogous to slavery and all forms of inequality and discrimination, encouraging permanent negotiation on working conditions and conflict resolution and the strengthening of mechanisms of dialogue between public administration, employers, workers and civil society. “The pact also seeks to promote decent work and the improvement of relations and working conditions in the viticulture of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, through the dissemination of guidelines and information that promote a healthy, safe work environment and in compliance with the norms legal throughout the sector’s production chain’, says the MTE, in a note. Entities must guide their members, associates and cooperative members regarding the adoption of responsible conduct, with the full application of worker protection standards and the management of social risks in the activity, such as work accidents, child labor and work similar to that of slaves. . As for the MTE, it is up to it to participate in the processes of formation and improvement of the affiliated entities and cooperatives, as well as of the associates and members. The MPT and the ILO will monitor the actions foreseen in the instrument, promoting the development of public policies, dialogue and social articulation in favor of decent work. “The pact is an effort, not only by the government and companies, but it must be an effort by all of society to eradicate this very perverse practice. It hurts everyone and especially the country’s image before the international community. Enough is enough to say, we don’t want work analogous to slavery. We need a new pattern of behavior in Brazilian society”, said the Minister of Labor and Employment, Luiz Marinho, in the ministry’s note. The president of Fetar/RS, Nelson Wild, argues that harvest hiring should be carried out via the National Employment System, Sine. For the director of the ILO in Brazil, Vinicius Pinheiro, the pact is a moment of historical relevance, it is the concrete result of social dialogue.
