The gaucho multi-artist Giuliano Lucas opens his first solo exhibition in the state of Rio de Janeiro this Saturday (3), at 1 pm, at Sesc Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense. The visitation will run from June 6th to August 26th, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 8 am to 5 pm, and will involve free activities, which include debates, workshops and lectures. Entitled Afroentes, the exhibition features works by the artist over 20 years of artistic production. The promotion has a language that respects a narrative about affection and ancestry. The artist told Agência Brasil that the exhibition “seeks to present an affirmative representation of black people, through photography. The name Afroentes comes from affection and thinking about the ancestors who created paths that we end up taking”, he said. Editing was done by Everson Roque. Reference Giuliano’s reference in the photograph was Januário Garcia Filho, who died in 2021 as a result of covid-19. With long work in the areas of advertising, music and documentation of Afro-descendants in the social, political, cultural and economic spheres, Januário participated in important spaces of memory, art and culture of black people, in addition to the professional sphere. “After Januário’s work, I began to dream of becoming a photographer. Until then, I didn’t know another black photographer”, reported the artist. It was then that he began to understand the representation of black people in photography and saw that it was possible to make a different photo from the one that links black people to misery, poverty and violence. “Januário’s photograph has a very great power to think about this representation in an affirmative way”, he opined. Several phrases by Januário Garcia Filho are famous and generate impact. For example: “There is a history of blacks without Brazil; but there is no history of Brazil without black people”. Diversity The initiative is very diverse and exalts black and peripheral representation. Curated by Ingrid Noal and Estevão de Fontoura, the show features photographs, installations, large-format posters, videos and films produced by the artist. Debates, workshops and lectures will be held on artistic production, market and job opportunities in the cultural sector, in addition to sharing knowledge, strategies and experiences for the sustainability of artistic production. According to Giuliano, the intention is to approach the young public so that they can understand that, through art, it is possible to exercise a paid profession. “Our biggest concern is to show people that there is a possibility, albeit a remote one, because we know that, in Brazil, issues are very limited by race and class. But still, there is a possibility. I want to show the younger crowd that in the arts, cinema and audiovisual, there is a possibility of work ”, he detailed. The artist hails from Porto Alegre, where the streets turned out to be his greatest asset, as he found no space in museums and galleries. Hence the presentation of lambe-lambe techniques, used in promotional actions. “I have been working with this technique on the street for many years, in large formats”, he recalled. The multi-artist brings to the exhibition the concept of African masks that interest more than the concept of beauty, “because [elas] say more with my story”, he highlighted. Pandemia During the pandemic of the new coronavirus, Giuliano promoted the #FRENTE – Festival Carioca de Fotografia Popular Emergente, selecting 40 photographers from the periphery to exhibit in a virtual gallery, aiming to encourage the multiple productions of artists and perspectives that emerge from the social, economic and cultural silence. cultural. The festival also had training with pedagogical actions and strategies on how to maintain and manage careers. The photographers were given an idea of how to manage their work, price it, establish sales, social networks and marketing, in addition to designing a career plan.
