President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced this Monday (5), the date on which World Environment Day is celebrated, that the federal government will launch a new security plan for the Amazon, in partnership with state governments. These are measures to combat crimes such as public land grabbing, illegal mining activities, logging, mining, as well as hunting and fishing in indigenous territories, areas of environmental protection and in the biome as a whole. “These crimes that degrade the environment are fed and, at the same time, feed a true criminal ecosystem. It is drug, arms and human trafficking, money laundering, slave labor, contract killings and exploitation sexual behavior of children and adolescents,” said Lula, during a speech at an event at the Planalto Palace. The action was called by the president the Amazon Plan: Preservation and Sovereignty. Among the actions to be carried out, the president cited the creation of the Environmental Operations Company of the National Public Security Force, the installation of integrated river and land bases to strengthen public security services in the region, construction or renovation of police stations, in addition to barracks and police stations at strategic points. The plan also provides for equipping and modernizing the means and infrastructure of public security agencies operating in the Legal Amazon, the implementation of the International Police Cooperation Center for the protection of the Amazon and integrated command and control centers, “with an emphasis on integrated intelligence “. “The message we are sending to criminals and the world is very clear: zero tolerance for the devastation of our environment. Full protection of indigenous peoples, including the use of force when necessary, and the demarcation of as many of their territories as possible .” Other points mentioned include the expansion and modernization of the naval means that patrol the rivers of the Amazon, the modernization of the network of captaincies, police stations and maritime authority agencies, support for the border platoons, increased operations in the Amazon, acquisition and modernization of aerospace systems and logistical equipment for the Armed Forces.
