The Wheelchair Basketball World Championship starts this Friday (9) in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). Brazil will be present with the male and female teams. The women debut on Saturday (10), at 2:45 am (Brasília time), against Canada. The men start the campaign on Sunday (11), at 5am, against the hosts. The games will be broadcast live on the channel of the International Federation of the modality (IWBF) on YouTube. “There were very intense training phases for us to do well in the competition. We hope to bring a very good result to Brazil”, projected Vileide, winger of the Brazilian women’s team – Ale Cabral/CPB/Direitos Reservas The men’s tournament brings together 16 teams, separated into four groups. All will be present in the round of 16. In the first phase, they play each other in brackets (three matches) to define the clashes in the elimination phase. In addition to the United Arab Emirates, the Brazilians will face Australia and Italy in the group. The women’s competition has 12 teams, divided into two keys with six teams. Teams from the same group face each other (five games) and the four best campaigns qualify for the quarterfinals. Brazil will measure forces with Canada, Australia, Spain, Great Britain and China. The last two selections will be the toughest rivals. The British are the current world runners-up, while the Chinese were silver medalists at the Tokyo Paralympics (Japan), in 2021. “We will internally assess how Brazil behaves in the face of such powerful teams. we cannot perform at the same level as them, but if we are able to match the game at times, that will be a sign that the process is being done well”, evaluated Martoni Sampaio, coach of the women’s team, to Agência Brasil. The two teams will compete in the World Cup for the fourth time. The men want to go beyond the ninth place in Amsterdam (Netherlands), in 2006. Coach Itamar Silva called up a team full of new faces. Of the 12 athletes, only Dwan Santos and Amauri Viana were in the previous edition, in Hamburg (Germany), in 2018. “Our team has been working hard to gain experience and develop the young athletes that make up it. of work that has been carried out by the development team, by the performance analysis and technical commission, under the approval of the executive board, with a renewal proposal”, commented Itamar, to the website of the Brazilian Confederation of Wheelchair Basketball (CBBC). The point guard Serginho is on the list of men’s selection, which debuts at 5 am (Brasília time) on Sunday (11) – Marcello Zambrana/Exemplus/CPB/Direitos Reservados The women’s team, in turn, has the tenth place in the Hamburg edition. Unlike the men’s team, the selection led by Martoni Sampaio brings together experienced athletes. Seven of the 12 called up competed in the World Cup in Germany five years ago: Perla Assunção, Silvelane Oliveira, Paola Klokler, Vileide Almeida, Maxcileide Ramos, Cleonete Reis and Oara Uchôa. “There were very intense training phases for us to do well in the competition. The anxiety is great, but we are excited, because we prepare a lot. We hope to bring a very good result to Brazil”, said Vileide, on the way to the third World Cup of his career. Focus on Parapan Despite being the main wheelchair basketball tournament after the Paralympics, the World Cup is seen by Brazilians as a “luxury preparation” for the biggest challenge of the year: the Parapan American Games in Santiago, in November. The male and female champions of the modality on Chilean soil are assured at the Games in Paris (France), in 2024. The silver medalists will have another chance in an international play-off, still without a date. “Having the Worlds so close to Parapan qualifies better. We consider something super positive, which will make us much better prepared. Our total priority is Parapan. The Worlds will be a process in this preparation”, stated Martoni. We have more summons for today! 📢The Brazilian men’s and women’s CR basketball teams are going to the Dubai World Cup!Learn more at: https://t.co/IPcuYbEG1y pic.twitter.com/b7Q6KT4ckQ — Brazilian Paralympic Committee (@cpboficial) April 11, 2023 Basketball was one of the only sports (the other was wheelchair rugby) that Brazil did not have representatives at the Tokyo Paralympics. In the men’s team, the team was without a vacancy after losing the bronze dispute in Parapan de Lima (Peru), in 2019, to Colombia. The women reached the podium in the Peruvian capital, in third place, but only the first two teams qualified for the Games. “We are still absorbing it. It was very bad to be away [de Tóquio], but we try to have that as a parameter, as enthusiasm to do better in other competitions. We know that it’s a matter of details so, God willing, we get to Parapan very well and get that vacancy”, concluded Vileide. Wheelchair basketball is one of the most traditional sports of the Paralympic movement, having integrated a rehabilitation project for war veterans in Stoke Mandeville (Great Britain), in the 1940s, considered a pioneer in parasports, coordinated by the German neurologist Ludwig Guttmann. The sport was in all editions of the Paralympics. As in conventional basketball, the Paralympic version has five athletes on each team. The difference is that, in addition to obviously using wheelchairs, they receive scores according to their disability, which varies from 1.0 to 4.5. The sum of the points of those on the court cannot exceed 14. How much the lower the score, the greater the player’s degree of physical-motor impairment During the match, the athlete must bounce the ball, throw it or pass it every two touches to move the chair. The dimensions of the court and the height of the basket are the same as for Olympic basketball, as well as the playing time (four periods of ten minutes).
