President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva participated this Saturday (17), in Belém, in the official announcement of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP 30), which will be held in the capital of Pará, in 2025. The event is considered the largest and the most important world summit related to climate on the planet and should bring together around 50,000 visitors to the city, including dozens of heads of state and diplomatic representatives. “Nothing about Brazil is more talked about in the world than the Amazon”, said Lula, during a speech at the event, remembering that the COP will be an opportunity for visitors from all over the world to get to know the reality of the Amazon and the people who live in the region. . “It is very important to take care of the ecosystem, biodiversity and the forest, but it is very important for us to take care of our people who live in the Amazon. It is important to know that 28 million human beings live here who need to work, eat, earn a salary and live with dignity”, emphasized the president. During the event, the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, and the Minister of Management and Innovation in Public Services, Esther Dweck, signed the contract for the assignment of the Brigadeiro Protásio Oliveira Airport for the implementation of the COP30 headquarters. Negotiations for the transfer of the site had been ongoing for three years, with no outcome, but were resolved during the Lula administration. On the site of the extinct airport, which was used for general aviation, is the City Park. There is also an important convention center in the vicinity, which should be one of the main hubs of the COP in two years’ time. The assignment of the terminal will be for 20 years, extendable for an equal period. “The COP is the most extraordinary opportunity we have to find a solution, whether for the environmental agenda, making Pará and Brazil protagonists in changing land use, valuing the living forest, generating green jobs, viability of an economic model that makes the forest stand, and that people can have jobs, income and livelihood”, highlighted the governor in a speech. Brazil’s candidacy was proposed in November 2022, during COP 27, held in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt. Last month, the candidacy received formal support from the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (Grulac) practically unanimously from the other South American countries, a requirement of the United Nations (UN). The choice should be officially confirmed at the end of the year, during COP28, in Dubai. Despite this, the organization process is already underway. Environmental projects are planned to provide the capital of Pará with a better transport structure, urban cleaning and basic sanitation. Agenda Earlier, in Abaetetuba (PA), Lula participated in the delivery of 222 houses from the Minha Casa Minha Vida program. The president and entourage will return to Brasília this Saturday. On Monday (19), he embarks on another international trip – he goes to Rome, for a meeting with Pope Francis. From there, he will head to Paris, where he will participate in a summit on the environment convened by French President Emmanuel Macron. Lula returns to Brazil at the end of the week.
