The beginning of winter, next Wednesday (21), should bring more rain to the southern region of Brazil. With the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, the country should experience a rainy season than normal in the South and Southeast, and a drier one in the entire northern half of the country. The removal of the extratropical cyclone that caused victims and destruction in Rio Grande do Sul last week will continue to favor the cold and dry weather that started this Saturday (17) in the region. Porto Alegre should have a minimum of 6 degrees Celsius (C°) on Monday (19), and Curitiba, 7C°. The cold weather should cause frost in cities of the three states this Sunday (18), which should be repeated on Monday, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) and Climatempo. Rain showers should be recorded again in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul on Wednesday (21) and Thursday (22), when the temperature rises a little, but does not exceed 20C°, according to Inmet. In the Southeast, where the cold brought a minimum of 8.5Cº to the capital of São Paulo, the Inmet forecast is that the low temperatures should continue, with a minimum, in São Paulo, of 12C° on Monday, 11C° on Wednesday and 10C° on Thursday. Belo Horizonte can also start the winter with a minimum of 10Cº and, for Rio de Janeiro and Vitória, minimums of 15C° and 16C° are expected, respectively. El Niño This year’s winter will have the impact of the El Niño phenomenon, which affects Brazil, increasing drought in the North, Northeast and northern part of the Midwest, and causing the opposite in the Southeast and South, with higher-than-normal rainfall. The phenomenon occurs when the waters of the Pacific Ocean in the Equator line warm up more than normal, which alters the wind system throughout South America, preventing the cold fronts that come from the South from advancing beyond the Southeast of the Brazil. The Climate Prediction Center of the United States Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed that El Niño has already formed and tends to strengthen throughout the winter. The phenomenon does not have a predictable duration, and can extend from six months to two years.
