From January to the first 15 days of June this year, the blood center of the National Cancer Institute (Inca) collected 4,516 bags of blood and platelet concentrates, an increase of 6.5% compared to that obtained in the same period last year, with 4,224 collections. The young age group, between 18 and 29 years old, represented 30% of the total collected, with 1,300 donations. Including young adult donors aged 30 to 39 years old, who accounted for 1,100 donations, the 18 to 39 age group accounted for more than 50% of the blood and platelets collected. The information was given this Monday (26) by Magda Adorno, a technologist and biochemistry pharmacist at Inca, who works in the clinical triage area. Around 2,000 blood bags were also collected, divided by donors in the 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 age ranges. Despite the increase recorded, the goal of collecting 70 bags per day is not being achieved, remaining 30% below what is needed, which makes it difficult to care for patients undergoing treatment at Inca’s four hospital units, said Magda Adorno. She reported that, on average, between 40 and 45 bags of blood are currently collected per day. “There are days when it is less. When it rains a lot, when there is a holiday. On amended holidays, donations and frequency tend to decrease here as well. Attendance is lower. When there is a holiday in the middle of the week, it doesn’t affect so much”. Each grant can benefit up to four people on average. “Because it depends on the conditions of the donor. If the donor takes anti-inflammatory drugs, we cannot do platelets. Then it won’t reach four people. It will reach three people or two”, explained the technologist. Blood stocks need to be constantly replenished to meet the demand, according to the head of the Institute’s Hemotherapy Service, Iara Motta. Corrente do Bem The Corrente de Bem group, which brings together residents of Saquarema, in the Lagos Region, took advantage of World Blood Donor Day, on the 14th, and Red June, to mobilize the city to donate blood in Inca. Founded last year, the group already has 700 registered donors. The Corrente de Bem mobilizer, Rejane Paranhos, informed that Inca was prioritized because it is also possible to register for bone marrow donation there. Rejane knows that this is a constant need and the group wants to make a broad contribution to the health of the patients served by the institute, she said. Magda Adorno said that organized supporter groups are also donors to the blood center of Inca, which also receives donors from other municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The institute does not have a transport service or partnership with transport companies and also does not have an external collection service. People between 16 and 69 years old, with a minimum weight of 50 kilos, who are in good health can donate. Minors under 18 years of age can only donate blood with the authorization of their parents or legal guardians. It is not necessary to be fasting, but you should avoid eating fatty foods in the four hours prior to the donation and not ingesting alcoholic beverages 12 hours before. Questions can be asked at Inca’s Hemotherapy Service at the phones 21 3207 1580 and 21 3207 1021. To donate, interested people should go to Praça Cruz Vermelha, 23, 2nd floor, central region of Rio de Janeiro. The service operates from Monday to Friday, from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm, and on Saturdays, from 8 am to 12 pm.
