The Ministry of Justice and Public Security informed this Wednesday (28) that it will send a group of public servants to Guarulhos International Airport, to work with the Afghan refugees who live there and who, since last week, have been facing an outbreak of scabies. The ministry did not provide further details on how the work will be carried out, but added that the employees will go to Guarulhos this Wednesday to “work on managing the emergency crisis, coordinating and providing the necessary care at this time”. “Sensitive to the situation at Guarulhos Airport, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) clarifies that it has been monitoring the situation of Afghans arriving in Brazil since the beginning of the year. Inter-ministerial meetings are being held with various bodies of civil society, the police and the Judiciary to solve the problem”, said the folder. Since 2021, when Taliban radicals took power, millions of Afghans have fled the country to flee a regime that violates their rights. Brazil became the destination of some of these Afghans when an interministerial ordinance was published in September 2021, authorizing the temporary visa and residence for humanitarian reasons. Since then, they began to arrive in Brazil, but without gaining access to a public reception policy, they are helpless and start to live inside the airport, with the support of volunteers and the City Hall of Guarulhos, which has contributed with food and sought to find vacancies. in municipal shelters which, according to the municipal administration, are currently full. Last week, volunteers identified an outbreak of scabies among Afghans living at the airport and reported it to authorities. On Tuesday (27), the mayor of Guarulhos, Gustavo Henric Costa (PSD), visited the place and informed Agência Brasil that all the Afghans living at the airport had been treated. The mayor said he sent official letters to several ministries to ask for support in assisting Afghans and for the city to be identified as a border town. “We need Guarulhos to be recognized as a frontier city. Although we do not have a land border with any country, we are the biggest gateway to South America, and that makes us need an assertive policy. We need the federal government, more than anything else, to lead the relocation of these Afghans to the interior, so that we can send 10, 20 or 30 Afghans to other big cities, so that they are well received and it makes sense that these people, who are taking refuge from a terrible situation in their country, find here [no Brasil] a better, welcoming place”. Last week, in response to Agência Brasil, the Ministry of Ports and Airports confirmed that it had received the letter sent by the Municipality of Guarulhos. “The document was forwarded to the National Policy Working Group on Migration, Refuge and Statelessness of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJ), which has the authority to forward the request,” the ministry said.
