In partnership with the Operational Support Center of the Prosecution Offices for the Protection of the Elderly (CAO Idoso), the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) launched a campaign to raise awareness of the population about the rights of the elderly over 80 years old , noting that the Statute of the Elderly, amended by Law No. 13,466 of 2017, gives priority to this age group. In the campaign, publicized by the MPRJ’s social networks, citizens from Rio de Janeiro are guided on how to proceed when witnessing a scene of disrespect for the Statute of the Elderly, whether caused by another consumer or the lack of structure for priority service. “Complying with the laws of the Statute is a duty and obligation of society”, emphasizes the MPRJ. The campaign highlights that preferential care should be provided in hospitals, clinics, supermarkets, cinemas, theaters, airports, among other places. Care for all elderly people must be individualized, with a specific location, special seats and visible signage, with attention given by trained employees, highlights the institution. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the forecast is for an increase in the elderly population in Rio de Janeiro, in this age group. In 2012, the +80 population totaled 309,004 people in the state, in absolute numbers. For 2023, the projection is that this group should exceed the mark of 500 thousand people, an increase of 64%. Inquiry The non-observance of special priority for those over 80 years of age in supermarkets gave rise to a civil inquiry initiated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Collective Guardianship for the Protection of the Elderly in the Capital. In the procedure, it was agreed that the Association of Supermarkets of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Asserj) would run a publicity campaign on the subject and proceed with the adaptation of establishments
