The president of the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) that investigates the coup attacks on January 8, deputy Arthur Maia (União Brasil – BA), ordered the Legislative Police to investigate the accusation that federal deputy Abílio Brunini (PL- MT) was transphobic during the testimony of the former aide-de-camp of the then President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid. According to senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE), Brunini made transphobic comments at the moment that federal deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP) began to question Mauro Cid, who is testifying on suspicion of participating in a conspiracy to reverse the result last year’s election, including plans to intervene in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Representative Erika Hilton is a transgender woman. “Mr Abílio was homophobic”, accused Carvalho, who, during the deposition, is sitting in the row of chairs in front of Brunini. “He made a homophobic speech when his partner [Hilton] was demonstrating, accusing her of offering services. This is homophobic and disrespectful”, added the senator, asking the chairman of the commission to order the federal deputy to leave the premises. Brunini denied having been disrespectful to the federal deputy, even receiving support from other parliamentarians, such as deputy André Fernandes (PL-CE). “If he [Brunini] said, what does this have to do with homophobia?”, questioned Fernandes, criticizing the way in which Erika Hilton had addressed Brunini shortly before. “It means that she can send him to take his deficiency somewhere else. Can she say that?”, asked Deputy André Fernandes. According to the deputy, when using the term “deficiency”, she was referring to the deputy’s behavior during the collegiate sessions. “He seems to want to get our attention. This seems to me to be behavior based on psychoanalysis, not on issues of gender or sexuality.” At least two other parliamentarians, including Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS), claimed to have heard Brunini refer to Erika Hilton’s intervention in a jocular tone, but given the deputy’s refusal, the committee chairman decided to follow Senator Rogério’s suggestion Carvalho and determine that the Legislative Police try to clarify the facts. “I didn’t hear it, but other parliamentarians are saying they heard it. Deputy Abílio says he did not speak. There is a contradiction. So, let’s do an investigation, listening to the footage”, said Maia, anticipating that Brunini will be punished if it is proven that he offended the deputy. “If Your Excellency spoke, there will be lip reading and it will be easy to identify [o que foi dito]. Obviously, Deputy Abílio, if Your Excellency acted in this way, there is no doubt that you will be penalized”, said Deputy Arthur Maia.
