The extratropical cyclone that has already reached the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul is expected to hit the municipality of Rio de Janeiro from this Thursday (13). According to the Alerta Rio System, the approach of a cold front will make the weather unstable in the city. Cariocas will notice an increase in cloudiness throughout the day and, at night, there is a forecast of light to moderate rain. The winds will be moderate to strong and can reach between 51.9 kilometers per hour (km/h) and 76 km/h. Waves can reach 4 meters (m) high on open sea beaches. The Brazilian Navy issued this Tuesday (11) a warning of rough seas for the coast of the city of Rio de Janeiro. From 9:00 pm this Thursday to 9:00 am on Saturday (15), waves measuring 2.5 m to 4 m in height can hit the city’s shore. The high waves are related to the extratropical cyclone that is already in the south of the country. According to the Alerta Rio System, the impacts in Rio will be milder. “The extratropical cyclone directly affects the southern region of Brazil, but its displacement through the ocean will influence the weather in the city of Rio, even if in a more attenuated way. There is a forecast of light to moderate rain for the next few hours and the possibility of strong winds, with gusts”, informs the chief meteorologist of Alerta Rio, Raquel Franco. Recommendations The Rio Operations Center recommends that locals and tourists avoid swimming in the sea and practicing water sports. In addition, they should stay away from the viewpoints on the shore, because giant waves can hit the place. Fishermen should avoid navigation, especially in small vessels. The guideline is not to go into the sea to rescue drowning victims. In such cases, the Fire Department must be called immediately by calling 193.
