The acting governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Gabriel Souza (in the center), informed, in a press conference this Thursday (13), that the state remains on alert because of heavy rains, windstorms and hail caused by the passage of an extratropical cyclone in the south of the country. According to him, floods are also expected in the region. Across the state, 49 counties were hit, and 23 people were injured, all out of danger. Of these, 15 are in the city of Sede Nova, where one victim was hospitalized because of a fracture, and eight are in Tapejara. A death was recorded in the city of Rio Grande, after a tree fell on a residence. In the capital Porto Alegre, the lack of electricity and the flooding of streets and avenues also caused traffic problems, even after the interruption of classes in public schools throughout the state, decreed on the afternoon of Wednesday (12). According to the acting governor, classes were suspended as a precaution because of gusts of wind that could pose a threat to people on the move. There is already confirmation that in the municipality of Sede Nova some schools would also have been hit by gusts of wind, affecting roofs and some structures. According to Souza, the municipality of Sede Nova was the most affected by the effects of the extratropical cyclone and, therefore, the state government sent a truck with 100 hygiene kits and 100 food baskets to help with humanitarian aid actions. “We intend, as soon as possible, to move from Porto Alegre and visit the municipality of Sede Nova, which was the hardest hit”, he said. Breakdowns in other public buildings are still being accounted for by the state, but the governor reinforced the request to the population to stay sheltered and follow the Civil Defense alerts.
