President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva participated, this Tuesday (18), in a breakfast with Latin American and European progressive and democratic leaders in Brussels, capital of Belgium. Organized by former Prime Minister of Sweden Stefan Löfven, the meeting takes place in parallel to the 3rd CELAC-European Union Summit. Celac is the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. At the end of the meeting, the 60 leaders participating in the meeting are expected to publish a joint statement on the progress made during the meetings. Negotiations aimed at an agreement between Mercosur and the European Union continue in bilateral meetings. Among the topics discussed during the breakfast organized by Löfven are the defense of democracy, the fight against inequality, the promotion of social well-being, respect for human rights, actions for the climate and the environment. Themes that, according to Planalto, represent points of common interest among the participants. The meeting brought together, in addition to President Lula, Alberto Fernández (Argentina), Gabriel Boric (Chile), Gustavo Petro (Colombia), the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Fredricksen, the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, and the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, among others. The government of Mexico was represented by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Barcena.
