Eletronuclear completed the installation of internet in six indigenous villages and three quilombos in the municipalities of Angra dos Reis, Paraty and Rio Claro, in the Costa Verde region of Rio de Janeiro. The project is part of the socio-environmental program of the company, responsible for the management and construction of nuclear power plants in Brazil, and meets the condition established by the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) for the operating license of the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Plant, in Angra dos Reis. In total, 578 families were covered by the initiative in the nine communities. “I think it’s important that [instalação de internet] for the very insertion of communities in the world. They are isolated villages and quilombos that need access to the internet. We identified this issue, it was our initiative, and it also ended up going through the Federal Public Ministry during a hearing, which is under discussion, for non-compliance with environmental conditions. We stated that we are working and managed to successfully install the internet in these indigenous villages and quilombos, despite the difficulties”, said this Thursday (20) to Agência Brasil the president of the state-owned company, Eduardo Grand Court. Eletronuclear arranged with the supplier to install a solar panel and batteries to be able to serve that specific village with internet. Renovation Work began on June 19 of this year in the Karai-Oka, Itaxi-Mirim, Itaxi Kanaa Pataxó villages and in the Quilombo Campinho da Independência, in Paraty. The following day, the internet was installed in the village of Rio Pequeno, in the same city, and in the Quilombo Santa Rita do Bracuí, in Angra dos Reis. On the 22nd of the same month, the Sapukai village, located in the Guarani do Bracuí Indigenous Land, also in Angra dos Reis, was contemplated. At the beginning of July, the service reached the Arandu-Mirim village, in Paraty, and the Quilombo Alto da Serra do Mar, in Rio Claro. The internet service is unlimited in the nine communities, in addition to its maintenance for five years. After this period, the initiative will be renewed in order to fill a gap in the Public Power, explained Grand Court. One of the beneficiaries is Benedito Bernardo Leite, 79 years old, a member of the Quilombo Alto da Serra do Mar, in Lídice, district of Rio Claro. “I’ve been here since 1958 and I never imagined having an opportunity like this, of being able to talk to whoever I want. I have 37 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Today, we will evolve. For the children, it will be worth a lot ”, he celebrated. For the deputy chief of the Karai-Oka village, Marcia Parai da Silva, who teaches in the community, the internet will be of great value. “I did high school and teaching in Santa Catarina. I had to leave here to study. Today, I’m studying Pedagogy at a distance. The internet will help me a lot. I want to expand my knowledge to serve my village, my students. I’m very happy for that”, he said. Eletronuclear’s project also contributes to the preservation of the culture and language of traditional peoples, allowing sharing and preservation of traditions and typical languages, in addition to offering professional opportunities for quilombolas and indigenous people, who usually sell handcrafted products to generate income.
