A fire in a mall in São Luís, capital of Maranhão, left two people dead and at least 12 injured. The fire started in a movie theater at Shopping Rio Anil, this Tuesday afternoon (7). At the time, more than 30 people were there. The flames were brought under control by early evening. According to the Fire Department, the body of the first victim was found inside the projection room, around 10 pm, and forwarded to the Legal Medical Institute. The second victim was found around 1:30 am. The female victims have yet to be identified. According to information released by the São Luís Municipal Health Secretariat, four people were admitted to the Municipal Hospital Dr. Clementino Moura (Socorrão II) and one was referred to the Djalma Marques Municipal Hospital (Socorrão I). The State Department of Health (SES) said that three more people were treated at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Parque Vitória and one in the UPA in Araçagi, with 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Through a note on a social network, Shopping Rio Anil said it was deeply shaken by the loss of two customers and that it sympathizes with the families of the victims. “We are committed to the care and assistance to customers who were injured and their families”, says the note, which also says that the company will help the competent bodies to identify the causes of the fire.
