The Cultural Center of the Attorney General of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PGE-RJ) inaugurated this Friday (5) the exhibition Nuances de Brasilidade: Repertório, which brings together works by 14 Brazilian or naturalized artists, belonging to four private collections. Entry is free. The exhibition will be open to the public until September 16, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 6pm. For this exhibition, curator Cecília Fortes resorted to works by private collectors in Rio de Janeiro, which allowed the selection of pieces. “The idea of working with works from private collections was precisely so that we could give more people the opportunity to see these works. Because, as they are from private collections, it turns out that a restricted public has access to these works. And the work of art reaches its maximum power in contact with the spectators. The more people can see the work, the more it reverberates”, guaranteed the curator. The collectors preferred not to be identified. “But they are art lovers, commentators”. According to Cecília, the great challenge in setting up the exhibition was thinking about what would be the common thread, that is, the narrative that would unite pieces from different collections that have different personalities. Works by Brazilian artists were then selected, some naturalized Brazilians, including from visual arts icons to young talents. “This is one of our guidelines. We are always working with national artists and uniting renowned artists with young talent, which is a way of giving visibility to those who are entering the artistic scene as well”. Brazilianness Works that approach the concept of Brazilianness in three aspects were selected. The Brazilian nature of the works can be perceived either through the chosen theme; by the materials chosen for the production of that work; and, finally, the influence of local culture and nature on the author of those works. “Hence the title of the show being Nuances of Brazilianness: Repertory, because we end up having a wide repertoire of works and varied profiles, but which have these nuances of Brazilianness as a common trait”, explained the curator. Among the participating artists are Abraham Palatnik, Emanoel Araújo, Ernesto Neto, Frans Krajcberg, José Bechara, Kilian Glasner, Luiz Braga, Luiz Zerbini, Mario Cravo Neto. Miguel Rio Branco, OSGEMEOS, Rubem Valentim, Santídio Pereira and Wagner Malta Tavares. This is the third art show presented at Convento do Carmo, a historic building located at Praça XV, in the central region of Rio de Janeiro, which was restored by PGE-RJ and reopened to the public in May 2022. Knowing art Cecília Fortes commented that the interesting is that people often pass by and are interested in visiting the historic building. “These are people who are not necessarily connoisseurs of visual arts. But we are careful to put a brief description next to each work, either about the work or the artist’s trajectory. Our proposal is to be a gateway for those who are not yet so knowledgeable about visual arts to be able to approach. Remove that barrier that the public that likes art has to be cultured or academic, or that has financial possibilities to be a collector. We want to bring art to an audience that sometimes has little contact and that, there, begins to understand a little more”. The exhibition is also open to school groups. Guided tours can be scheduled by email. There is no restriction on days for student visits, said Cecília Fortes.
