Heavy rains hit part of the South Region, this Friday (5) and Saturday (6). The volume of water can exceed 100 millimeters (mm) in 24 hours. The forecast is from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The highest volume of rainfall will occur in Rio Grande do Sul. Inmet published a red alert notice for the central, southwest, southeast and northeast areas of the state, in addition to the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The high danger alert indicates the risk of major flooding and river overflows and large landslides on the slopes of cities. The Inmet meteorologist, Dayse Morais, explained what has caused the heavy rains. “This flow of hot and humid air is coming from Paraguay and the Amazon region and has converged in this region of Rio Grande do Sul. They are low and medium level westerly winds.” She mentioned the consequences, in addition to the increase in rainfall “These factors together cause a lot of cloudiness and a drop in temperatures,” Inmet instructs residents of these regions to turn off electrical appliances, the general power grid; observe the alteration in the slopes; stay in a sheltered place. And in case of flooding, protect your belongings from the water by wrapping them in plastic bags. Citizens can call the municipal bodies of Civil Defense, telephone 199, and the Fire Department, number 193, to seek more information and guidance on what to do in case of extreme events. Orange alert This Friday, Inmet also decreed an orange alert, a danger indicator, for the entire state of Rio Grande do Sul, in addition to the south and west of Santa Catarina and west of Paraná. Rainfall of up to 100 mm per day, with intense winds of 60 to 100 km/h, pose a danger and there is a risk of power outages, falling tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges. The guideline, in case of gusts of wind, is not to seek shelter under trees, as there is a risk of falling and electrical discharges, and not to park vehicles close to transmission towers and advertising signs, due to the risk of falling. According to meteorologist Dayse Morais, between Sunday (7) and Monday (8), a cold front will advance over part of Santa Catarina and Paraná and will gradually move away from Rio Grande do Sul. For the rest of the country, until Saturday, the meteorologist predicts heavy rains, also in the north of the country, with emphasis on Amazonas, Acre, Rondônia and Pará, descending to the central-west region, via Mato Grosso. The National Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense (SEDEC), of the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development, based on data from the National Center for Monitoring and Natural Disaster Alerts (Cemaden/MCTI), reaffirms the moderate possibility of flash floods, and floods, in the states of Amazonas and Rio Grande do Sul.
