The Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF) is demanding information from the Clube de Regatas do Flamengo about the whereabouts of a bronze plaque honoring student Stuart Angel at his rowing venue. According to the MPF, the object was in a memorial at the site and was removed during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Stuart Angel, who was a rowing athlete for Flamengo and Rio champion, disappeared during the military dictatorship, after being arrested and tortured in Galeão Air Base, in 1971. Son of fashion designer Zuleika Angel Jones, known as Zuzu Angel, and Norman Angel Jones, he was an economics student at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). In politics, he was a member of the Student Dissidence of the PCB of Guanabara, which was later renamed MR-8. The location of the tribute is symbolic because, according to the Ministry of Human Rights (MDH), Stuart Angel spent three days hiding in Flamengo’s boathouse, before going underground in the early 1970s. , in the same place, with the second Carioca championship in the category Eight, informed the MDH. The MPF gave Flamengo ten days to respond about the whereabouts of the plate. According to the prosecutors, the homage to Stuart Angel is a way of guaranteeing that future generations are aware of the violations of human rights committed by the State, in order to prevent this from happening again in the future. Still according to the MPF, the plate had been installed in 2010, but, after its withdrawal for the Olympic Games, it was no longer seen. “Now, the Ministry of Human Rights has a project to reopen the plaque and there is no information about where it is”, informs a note from the MPF. The MDH reported that the tribute to Stuart Angel is part of the Lugares de Memória program. According to the ministry, the bronze plaque and the sculpture that supported it were removed from the club to adapt the space to the olympics’ rowing and canoeing events. Agência Brasil contacted Flamengo’s press office, but did not receive a response until the publication of this report.
