Lawyer Cristiano Zanin (photo) should be appointed to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) this Thursday (1st) by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The information was provided by the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, who met with Zanin yesterday. “I met Cristiano Zanin yesterday. He will be nominated by the President of the Republic for the position of Minister of the Federal Supreme Court. This message should reach the Senate today and, when it arrives, we will forward it to the Constitution and Justice Commission. I have already spoken with President Davi Alcolumbre who will follow up on the message at the CCJ”, said the parliamentarian. Asked if he considers that Zanin is a good name for the Supreme Court, Pacheco answered yes. “Someone who meets the conditions and has the predicates to be a minister of the Federal Supreme Court and this is an assessment, obviously, that the Senate collegiate will have the opportunity to make”, said Pacheco. The president of the CCJ, Davi Alcolumbre, must indicate a rapporteur responsible for presenting the opinion on the nominee. Next, a date will be set for Zanin’s sabbath at the CCJ and for voting on the rapporteur’s opinion. Approved at the CCJ, the issue will be immediately discussed in the full Senate, according to Pacheco. “Nothing will stop in the Senate”, highlighted the congressman. To win a seat on the Supreme Court, lawyer Cristiano Zanin needs the votes of 41 of the 81 senators of the Republic. Cristiano Zanin will be nominated by Lula to take over the chair that belonged to Ricardo Lewandowski, who retired in April this year. Zanin was the lawyer responsible for defending President Lula during Operation Lava Jato, when he gained national and international notoriety. It was based on a lawsuit headed by Cristiano Zanin that the United Nations Commission on Human Rights recognized that Lula’s arrest, in 2018, violated due process of law and that, therefore, the ban on him participating in that year’s election violated the political rights of the current president.
