In addition to presenting the work plan on the investigations by the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) into the Coup this Tuesday (6), the commission’s rapporteur, senator Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA), attached 62 requests to the document, among they requested to hear witnesses and request information from public bodies responsible for security or for the investigation of the January 8 acts. All applications must be approved by a majority of the CPMI. Voting on the applications was scheduled for next Tuesday, June 13th. Among the requests is the request to hear, as a witness, the former Minister of Defense of the Bolsonaro government, Army General Walter Braga Netto. According to the application, “Walter Braga Netto will be able to bring information of enormous value to the conduct of our future work”. The rapporteur also wants to hear Anderson Torres. He was Bolsonaro’s Minister of Justice and, on the day of the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers in Brasília, he was the head of the Public Security Secretariat of the Federal District (SSP-DF). Another witness listed is the former president’s aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cesar Barbosa Cid. “Their manifestations in already publicized dialogues suggest possible involvement on an even larger scale than initially indicated”, indicates the rapporteur’s request. Other requests ask for the questioning as witnesses of the former head of the Institutional Security Office (GSI) of the Bolsonaro government, General Augusto Heleno; and the then head of the GSI during January 8, Marco Edson Gonçalves Dias, already appointed by the current government. Other names identified as fundamental by the rapporteur are the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, and the public security intervenor in the DF, Ricardo Cappelli. Rapporteur Eliziane Gama requests, in all, the hearing of 32 people. Among them, there are businessmen investigated for financing the coup acts, public agents of the Military Police and the Civil Police of the Federal District, the Planalto Military Command, the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the Federal Police, in addition to the prisoners accused of the attempt to place a bomb near Brasilia Airport. Apart from the requests presented by the rapporteur, another 230 requests for hearings and information were on the CPMI agenda presented by the members of the commission. All of them should be analyzed next week. Secrecy of reports Among the requests presented by the rapporteur is the request for the intelligence reports of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) to be reclassified from confidential to public. The reclassification of all reports “since December 2022, containing warnings and analysis of risks related to invasions and depredations of public buildings” is requested. According to the senator, “after the press reports that there are suspicions of adulteration and omission of relevant information in the reports (…) sent to the National Congress by the former chief minister of the SGI, Gonçalves Dias, the need to documents to be made public. Eliziane Gama also requests information about the coup acts from different instances, including the CPI of the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District, which has been investigating the coup acts and the Military Police of the DF, including the PMDF inquiries to investigate the conduct and omissions of the commanders and other agents on the day of the invasion and depredation of the headquarters of the Three Powers and data on the total number of troops mobilized on the Esplanade that day.
