The Superior Court of Sports Justice for Football (STJD) punished Corinthians with the loss of a field command, which will be fulfilled behind closed doors, because of homophobic chants sung by its fans during a game against São Paulo, valid for the current edition of the Brazilian Championship and played on May 14. The punishment was given based on article 243 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, which prohibits “practicing a discriminatory, disdainful or outrageous act, related to prejudice based on ethnic origin, race, sex, color, age, elderly status or disabled”. On that occasion, the judge who acted in the classic, Bruno Arleu de Araújo, recorded in the summary that he interrupted the confrontation at 18 minutes of the second half because of the homophobic manifestation of the Corinthians fans. In addition, the Civil Police of São Paulo opened an inquiry to investigate profiles on social networks that would have encouraged homophobic actions during the match. The punishment imposed on the Parque São Jorge club was imposed after the publication, by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), of the text of the 2023 General Competition Regulation, which established that acts of discrimination in competitions organized by the highest entity of Brazilian football could lead to sporting punishments.
