The former minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Sepúlveda Pertence, died this Sunday (2) of respiratory failure, at the Hospital Sírio Libanês, in Brasília, where he had been hospitalized for more than a week. He was 85 years old. The wake will be held on Monday (3), from 10 am, in the White Room of the STF, and the burial is scheduled for 4:30 pm, in Campo da Esperança – Ala dos Pioneiros, in the federal capital. On behalf of the STF, the president of the body and of the National Council of Justice, Minister Rosa Weber, lamented the death of former Minister José Paulo Sepúlveda Pertence, whom he considers one of the most brilliant jurists in the country, having arrived at the STF shortly after the enactment of the 1988 Citizen Constitution. In the note released by the STF, Minister Rosa Weber recalled that Sepúlveda Pertence, born in the Minas Gerais town of Sabará, graduated from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. “He took a master’s course at the University of Brasília, where he was a professor. Approved in first place in the public tender for the Public Ministry of the Federal District, he was retired by the Military Board based on AI-5. Appointed Attorney General of the Republic in 1985, he left office to assume the post of Minister of the Supreme Court in 1989, appointed by President José Sarney. He played a relevant role in the Amnesty after the military dictatorship and in the Constituent Assembly, in 1987. He presided over the Federal Supreme Court between 1995 and 1997, having retired in 2007. He continued to dedicate himself to law and returned to the practice of Law”. Biography Considered one of the greatest Brazilian jurists, José Paulo Sepúlveda Pertence was born in Sabará (MG), on November 21, 1937. He was married to Suely Castello Branco Pertence and had three children: Pedro Paulo, Evandro Luiz and Eduardo José. He graduated in law from the Faculty of Law of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in 1960, winning the Rio Branco medal, destined for the best student in the class. Appointed to the STF on May 4, 1989, in the vacancy resulting from the retirement of Minister Oscar Corrêa, he took office on the 17th of the same month. On November 9, 1994, he was elected vice-president of the STF, assuming the presidency of the body, through election, on April 19, 1995. At his request, he retired from the position of Minister of the Supreme on August 17, 2007 , being appointed by the President of the Republic to serve as a member of the Public Ethics Commission, with a three-year term, by decree of December 3, 2007.
