The Federal Supreme Court (STF) scheduled a hearing with the government of Rio de Janeiro to address compliance with the court’s decision that determined the installation of cameras in the uniforms and vehicles of the Battalion of Special Police Operations (Bope). The meeting is scheduled for May 4, at 2:30 pm, at the STF. In December of last year, Minister Edson Fachin determined that the government of Rio should present a timetable for installing the cameras. The measure was taken after the Court’s decision that forced the corporation to install equipment to combat the lack of investigation into the death of citizens during clashes between police and criminals in Rio’s communities. In August 2020, the STF restricted the carrying out of police operations in Rio. According to the decision, operations could only be triggered in exceptional cases. And the police have to justify the measures in writing and communicate them to the state Public Prosecutor’s Office, the body responsible for external control of police activity. The measure was taken after the death of Ágatha Vitória Sales Félix, 8 years old, in Complexo do Alemão, in September 2019.
